The brief, in one line
Home has exactly one function: tell Margaret whether today's session is done, and if not, which one to start. Not a dashboard, not a checklist — a single next action.
Every day carries a Morning Wake-Up. Some days add a 30-minute main workout after it. When both exist, only one is ever the active call-to-action at a time — the second waits, quietly, until the first is done.
Reference pattern for a single dominant action, pulled from Mobbin: Breathwrk (hero circle), How We Feel (question + dial), QUITTR (ring as hero), Runna (card with pinned CTA).
Hero circle
Pattern reference: Breathwrk — a single glowing circle is the entire screen; everything else recedes.
One large circular tap target, dead center, is the whole screen. Session name and length sit inside or just beneath it. If a second session is queued, it appears as one quiet line below — not a card, so it can't compete.
Trade-off: the most confident single-action read of the four, but a bare circle can't show a video still or much context — it works best when the session name alone (“Morning Wake-Up”) is enough information.
Task card, pinned CTA
Pattern reference: Runna — a single named card for today's session, with the action pinned to it, not floating free.
One full-width card names the active session and shows a thumbnail still, with its own CTA button anchored to the card's bottom edge. The most information-dense option without becoming a list — still exactly one actionable card on screen.
Trade-off: closest to what she already has muscle memory for from other apps, and leaves room for a still frame that makes the session recognizable — but a card is one more visual boundary than a bare circle, and needs restraint to not grow a second card.
Progress ring
Pattern reference: How We Feel (dial as the question) crossed with QUITTR (ring as the hero visual).
A ring showing today's fraction (0 of 1, or 0 of 2) doubles as the tap target — its center names the next session. Fills in as each part of the day is completed.
Trade-off: the ring communicates "how much of today is left" at a glance, which is useful on two-task days — but a fraction/progress visual edges toward the “progress dashboard” the product spec explicitly rules out. Best considered only if the ring reads as today's shape, not a running score.
Full-bleed hero
Pattern reference: Runbuds — the screen is the session, chrome reduced to a thin top bar and a pinned action.
A near-full-screen still of the session fills the top of the frame, title and length overlaid at the bottom edge, one CTA pill sitting just below it. The most visually rich option — the session is recognizable before reading a word.
Trade-off: most reliant on having a genuinely good still for every session (Morning Wake-Up included), and the heaviest to load on a slow connection — the thing the product spec explicitly asks the player screen to guard against.
Recommendation
B (task card, pinned CTA) carries the most information — session name, a recognizable still, and duration — while still keeping exactly one card on screen at a time. It reads as familiar rather than novel, which matters more than originality for this audience.
A (hero circle) is the fallback if a good still isn't available for every session (Morning Wake-Up especially) — it needs nothing but a name and a number, so it degrades gracefully.
C is set aside: a fill-fraction ring risks reading as the progress dashboard the spec rules out, even with calm copy. D is set aside for this pass: it demands a strong still for every session and the heaviest network cost, worth revisiting once real footage exists.
| Layout | Reads as | Handles 2-task day | Needs strong stills | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · Hero circle | Single ritual action | Quiet queued line | No | Low context without a still |
| B · Task card | Named session to start | Locked strip below card | Nice to have | Card sprawl if not disciplined |
| C · Progress ring | How much of today's left | Ring segments | No | Reads as a progress dashboard |
| D · Full-bleed hero | Cinematic, session-first | Collapsed strip below | Yes, every session | Load weight, needs footage |
